5α-Reduced Steroids

Meaning

Five-alpha reduced steroids are a class of potent steroid metabolites generated by the action of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme on various parent hormones. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), derived from testosterone, represents the most clinically significant member of this group, demonstrating amplified androgen receptor affinity and activity in specific tissues. These compounds are structurally characterized by the saturation of the double bond at the C4-C5 position of the steroid A-ring. Their physiological roles extend beyond androgen action to include neuroendocrine signaling and metabolic regulation.
