3β-HSD

Meaning

3$beta$-HSD, or $3beta$-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, is a crucial enzyme in steroidogenesis. It catalyzes the conversion of $Delta^5$-3$beta$-hydroxysteroids into $Delta^4$-3-ketosteroids, a necessary step in the synthesis pathway for various critical hormones. Clinically, its activity is fundamental for producing androgens, estrogens, and corticosteroids from their immediate precursors. Dysfunction in this enzyme can lead to significant alterations in the hormonal milieu, impacting reproductive and adrenal function.
