2/16α Ratio

Meaning

This clinical metric reflects the balance between two primary estrogen metabolites: 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) and 16α-hydroxyestrone (16α-OHE1). The ratio provides insight into how the body is metabolizing estrogen through different detoxification pathways in the liver. A higher ratio, indicating a greater production of the 2-hydroxy pathway, is generally considered favorable. This is because the 2-OHE1 metabolite is often seen as less proliferative and potentially more protective in certain tissues. Clinicians utilize this ratio, often measured in urine, to assess an individual’s detoxification profile and potential risk factors.
