17β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase

Meaning

17β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase, often abbreviated as 17β-HSD, represents a family of enzymes critical for steroid hormone metabolism, catalyzing the reversible interconversion between 17-ketosteroids and 17β-hydroxysteroids. These enzymes regulate the biological activity of various steroid hormones, including estrogens and androgens, by either activating inactive precursors or deactivating active forms through the addition or removal of a hydroxyl group at the 17-beta position of the steroid nucleus.
