Β-Arrestin

Meaning

Beta-Arrestin (β-Arrestin) is a critical family of signaling and scaffolding proteins that serves a dual regulatory role for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), the most common targets for hormones and neurotransmitters. Its initial function is to desensitize the receptor by terminating the G protein-mediated signaling cascade, preventing excessive cellular stimulation. Increasingly, β-Arrestin is also recognized as an independent signaling molecule, initiating distinct, G protein-independent intracellular pathways that modulate cellular function.
