α-MSH

Meaning

α-MSH, or alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone, is a tridecapeptide derived from the larger prohormone Pro-Opiomelanocortin (POMC) that functions as a critical neuropeptide and endocrine signaling molecule. It is best known for its role in regulating skin pigmentation, but its broader physiological importance includes potent anti-inflammatory effects, modulation of appetite, and central nervous system signaling. This peptide acts through the melanocortin receptor family to exert its diverse biological actions.
